Answering the Needs of Citizens with Handicaps through Organized Recreation

ANCHOR (Answering the Needs of Citizens with Handicaps through Organized Recreation) continues its winter and spring programming with a varied and enriched schedule of recreational activities on weeknights and Saturdays. Developmentally disabled residents, five years of age and older, are eligible to participate. Specific times and locations of ANCHOR programs are announced in the participant calendar.

The ANCHOR weekday programs are designed to develop socialization skills, improve self image and integrate the participant into the community. Diverse recreational programs such as bowling, swimming, fitness, sports, drama workshop and Club ANCHOR for teens and adults are offered to participants on weekdays after school and in the evenings.

Programs

Summer Program at Lido Beach
Camp A.N.C.H.O.R, the town's six-week summer day camp, will serve approximately 680 children and adults with special needs throughout the summer. This comprehensive recreational day camp will be available to eligible participants who are five years of age and over. Transportation is provided.

 

Saturday Recreation
Professional educators, specialists, paraprofessionals and volunteers will supervise and conduct many activities including art, music, dance, physical education, home economics, special events and field trips during an all-day Saturday program. Participants are grouped according to age, needs and ability. Transportation to and from the ANCHOR centers is provided by the town.

 

ANCHOR Volunteers
If you are 14 years of age or older and interested in becoming a Camp ANCHOR volunteer for the summer of 2010, please call the ANCHOR office at (516) 431-6946 during the first week in January (starting on January 4th) to be put on our wait list. Our current volunteer corps will receive priority and then we will take names from the wait list to fill the remaining slots for our upcoming summer program. Those prospective volunteers will receive an application that must be sent back completed. Please note that our volunteers are called upon to assist in many situations that require hands-on support. Please only apply if you feel capable of handling the very special needs of our participants and can commit to the full 6 weeks of our camp program which runs from July 6 to August 13, as well as our mandatory orientation on June 29th.
