Answering the Needs of Citizens with Handicaps through Organized Recreation

The Town of Hempstead ANCHOR program continues its winter and spring programming with a varied and enriched schedule of recreational activities on weeknights and Saturdays. Developmentally-disabled residents, five years of age and older, are eligible to participate. Specific times and locations of ANCHOR programs are announced in the participant calendar.

The ANCHOR weekday programs are designed to develop socialization skills, improve self image and integrate the participant in the community. Diverse recreational programs such as bowling, swimming, fitness, sports, drama workshop and Clun ANCHOR for teens and adults are offered to participants on weekdays after school and in the evenings.

Programs

Saturday Recreation Program
Professional educators, specialists in recreation and the arts, para-professionals and volunteers, supervise and conduct organized games, home economics, drama, music, arts and crafts, dance, special events and field trips during an all-day recreation program. Participants are grouped according to age, needs and ability. Bus transportation to and from ANCHOR centers is provided by the town.

 

Summer Program at Lido Beach
Camp ANCHOR, the town's six-week summer day camp, will serve approximately 600 children and adults with special needs throughout the summer. This comprehensive recreational day camp will be available to eligible participants who are five years of age and over. Transportation is provided. This year's camp will be held on weekdays from Monday, July 7 to Thursday, August 14.

If you are 14 years of age or older and wish to lend a helping hand at Camp ANCHOR during the summer, call the ANCHOR Office between January 1, 2008 and February 1, 2008 to receive an application. Volunteers are accepted based on seniority and on a first-come,
first-serve basis.
