The issuance of medallions is to regulate passenger carrying vehicles and to protect the public from unlicensed and uninsured operators. All drivers are fingerprinted and checked for previous criminal records. The licensing period is for one year from October 1 through September 30. Taxi drivers are charged a fee of $15. Town of Hempstead license inspectors and the Nassau County Police Department enforce these regulations. Violations call for the issuance of an appearance ticket returnable in Second District Court.
The completed application must be signed and notarized and submitted with vehicle registrations, proof of workers compensation and disability coverage, certificate of insurance, corporate disclosure statements, and rate sheets and/or zone maps.
All vehicles must have, and make available in the vehicle, a vehicle identification card.
